A month left, and it all comes down to Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arsenal have been top since September. Not by fluke, not by good fortune, they’ve been the most consistent side in England all season. But City are right behind them, playing the best football of either team over the last month, and the Etihad is where it gets settled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guardiola said it plainly in his pre-match presser: “If we lose, it’s over.” Arteta matched him. No talk of containing City, no managing the game, “we prepare every game to win.” Both managers know exactly what this is. Neither is pretending otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s actually at stake<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

City win and they’re three points back, with a game in hand against Burnley three days later. They could be top by Wednesday. That’s the worst-case scenario Arsenal have been dreading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arsenal win and they’re nine points clear with five games left. At that point, honestly, it’s done. Even the most anxious Gunners fan goes to sleep without checking the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A draw keeps Arsenal in front but gives City a shot. Every result changes the picture, which doesn’t happen often this late in a season. That’s how tight it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How we got here<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

They’ve met twice already. September at the Emirates ended 1-1 City sat deep, Haaland scored early, Martinelli equalised in the 93rd. Scrappy. No one walked away feeling they’d seen anything definitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Carabao Cup final last month was something else. Arsenal were on a 14-game unbeaten run. City were shaky coming off a Champions League exit to Real Madrid. It looked like Arsenal’s day. Guardiola made changes at half-time, Nico O’Reilly scored twice on his 21st birthday, and City won 2-0. Didn’t even look stretched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since that final: City have beaten Liverpool and Chelsea, seven goals, nothing conceded. Arsenal have played four, won once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s not a rough patch. That’s a team that’s lost its footing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The midfield battle that decides everything<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rice vs Rodri. If you watch one thing on Sunday, watch this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rodri ran the Carabao Cup final once Guardiola made his half-time switch. If he controls the middle again, Arsenal won’t get into the game. Rice has played a brutal schedule and there are real signs of tiredness. But he showed up ill for the Sporting quarterfinal and went 90 minutes as captain. He won’t want to disappear in this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also worth watching: Donnarumma. Arsenal’s most reliable threat when they’re not creating from open play is set-pieces, and Gabriel Magalh\u00e3es is very good in those situations. If Donnarumma is hesitant, doesn’t claim crosses, punches when he should catch, Arsenal will find a way in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the other end, Haaland is back to his sharpest after a slow start to 2026. Cherki is the most in-form player in the league right now. That’s before you even factor in Doku and Semenyo. Arsenal’s defence is the best in the division. It’s going to be a long afternoon for someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thing nobody’s saying loudly<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Arteta has been too conservative against City, consistently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years ago at the Etihad: 0-0. Last season: Arsenal were 2-1 up at half-time, Trossard got sent off, and they didn’t attempt a single attack in the second half. Arteta defended it. It didn’t land well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He can’t do that again. Arsenal aren’t as defensively solid as they were in November or December. A passive setup risks getting picked apart on the break, which is exactly how City have beaten teams this month. But going too open gives Haaland and Cherki room to run, which is its own problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arteta says they’re going to win it, not protect a draw. That’s the right call. A conservative performance that ends in a defeat or even a draw now doesn’t just cost points, it confirms a version of this Arsenal team that keeps getting close and coming up short. That story is hard to rewrite once it sticks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How it’s likely to go<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We see a City win, 3-1 or 2-0. Momentum, preparation time, and individual quality in attack that Arsenal currently can’t match. Hard to argue with that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

City have been here before. April 2023, Arsenal came to the Etihad five points clear. Left losing 4-1. Won the title by five points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History doesn’t have to repeat. But the form table, the recent head-to-heads, and the confidence gap all point the same direction. Arsenal need a performance they haven’t produced in weeks, away from home, against the team that already beat them this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
