There’s a version of this story where you just list the numbers and walk away. 91 goals. 69 games. One calendar year. But the numbers alone don’t really capture how genuinely strange 2012 was as a Messi year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gerd M\u00fcller’s record of 85 goals in a calendar year had stood since 1972. Forty years. In football terms, that’s geological time. Pel\u00e9 never got there. Ronaldo, playing in the same league, in the same era, finished 2012 with 63, a number that would make virtually any other striker in history feel excellent about themselves. Messi passed M\u00fcller’s mark with nearly two weeks left in the year and then scored five more anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What 91 actually looks like<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Barcelona got 79 of them: 59 in La Liga, 13 in the Champions League, five in the Copa del Rey, two in the Spanish Super Cup. Argentina got the other 12, five in qualifiers, seven in friendlies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He scored every 66 minutes on average. More than half his goals came after halftime. Forty of the 91 arrived in the last 30 minutes of games. That last number is the one I keep coming back to. This wasn’t tap-ins against open nets in the opening ten minutes. He was finishing teams off when they were most organised, most desperate to hold on. Late goals aren’t lucky. Late goals mean you kept pressing when everyone else was relieved to still be level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He scored in 47 games that year. In 22 of those, he scored twice. In nine, he got a hat-trick, including five against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League. More multi-goal games than blank ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The La Liga season running alongside all of this<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here’s what people tend to forget: Barcelona didn’t win La Liga in 2012. Real Madrid beat them to it. And Messi still scored 50 league goals, breaking the single-season La Liga record, past Ronaldo’s previous best of 41 from the year before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top scorer in a losing season. Let that sit for a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Racing Santander, a full professional football squad, scored 28 La Liga goals that entire campaign. Messi’s league total alone was 59. His numbers beat 13 complete La Liga teams from that season. That comparison shouldn’t be possible. It happened anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the margin of the record actually meant<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Messi beat M\u00fcller by roughly seven percent. The baseball equivalent would be someone breaking Barry Bonds’ single-season home run record of 73, not by one or two, but by five. Records don’t usually move like that. They get nibbled at over years, edged past, with weeks of buildup and breathless countdowns. Messi didn’t edge past M\u00fcller. He left him behind, then kept going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And M\u00fcller’s record had already cleared Pel\u00e9’s 75 goals from 1958 on the way up. So in a single year, Messi rewrote what two of the greatest players in history had produced at their absolute peaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pace he kept to do it<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

He played more than once every six days on average. His last 20 games of the year produced 28 goals, slightly ahead of his pace for the rest of 2012. No fade, no coasting into December. Still accelerating when the year was almost done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final goal came on December 22nd, against Valladolid, in a 3-1 win. It was also a hard day for Barcelona. Tito Vilanova had undergone throat surgery two days earlier, the second operation in two years. Both teams wore support messages before kickoff. Messi scored anyway. Of course he did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does this ever get broken?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Genuinely hard to see how. You’d need a player with Messi’s finishing, at a club creating the kind of chances that Barcelona were generating in that era, staying fit across an entire calendar year of club and international football, and peaking at exactly the right moment across all of it simultaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s been over a decade. Nobody’s come close. Given how modern football has shifted, tighter defensive structures, more physically demanding pressing systems, congested schedules, it might sit untouched for another forty years, the same way M\u00fcller’s did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2012 wasn’t just Messi’s best year. It’s the greatest individual scoring season any footballer has ever put together. The numbers make the case on their own. The context makes it stranger still.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
