Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) just finished a disastrous IPL 2026 campaign. The franchise ended the season at the bottom of the points table with just four wins from 14 matches. Now, massive changes are brewing in the Lucknow camp. The management is seriously considering a LSG captaincy change before the next season.

Franchise Director of Cricket, Tom Moody, dropped a major bombshell following their final seven-wicket loss to Punjab Kings. He hinted that the team desperately needs a complete overhaul.

The Weight of Rs 27 Crore

LSG bought Rishabh Pant for a record-breaking Rs 27 crore in the 2025 mega auction. The management expected instant success and handed him the leadership role. However, the reality looks completely different. Under Pant’s captaincy, LSG managed only 10 wins out of 28 matches across two seasons. They finished seventh in 2025 and dropped to the bottom two in 2026.

Tom Moody spoke honestly during the post-match press conference. “From a captaincy point of view, he has found it challenging. The results reflect that,” Moody told reporters. He added that the franchise will give “very serious consideration” to the team’s future leadership. This strong statement serves as a clear Tom Moody LSG update that a leadership shake-up is imminent.

Did Captaincy Ruin Pant’s Batting?

The burden of leadership clearly affected Rishabh Pant IPL performance with the bat. Pant is famous for his explosive, destructive hitting. Unfortunately, his time at LSG has been unusually quiet. He scored 312 runs in 13 innings this season, managing just a single half-century.

Across his two seasons with the franchise, Pant’s strike rate dropped to 135.74. This sits well below his career IPL strike rate of over 144. Moody openly wondered if the immense pressure of leading the side dragged down Pant’s natural batting game.

A Total Reset Expected

Moody did not blame Pant alone. He emphasized that the entire squad must take collective accountability for the horror run. However, he explicitly stated that the franchise requires a complete Lucknow Super Giants leadership reset to fix the core issues.

Pant’s cricket career is hitting a rough patch. He recently lost India’s Test vice-captaincy to KL Rahul and lost his spot in the ODI squad. Now, he faces the real threat of losing his IPL captaincy. Will LSG sack Pant or release him back into the auction pool? The Lucknow management has a long, tough winter of reflection ahead.
